The Original Game
Vintage base ball is an effort to continue the style of play that was original to the game (~1860). Unlike baseball today, vintage base ball is actually more accessible to people of all skill levels. Plus, you don’t even need a glove!
Unique Rules and Aspects
- Players don’t wear gloves
- Wood bats are used
- The ball is slightly larger and softer than today’s baseball
- It’s an out if you catch the ball off one bounce
- Pitching is underhand, with a goal to get the ball in play
- No balls or walks
- Strikes only happen if you swing and miss
- If a ball lands in fair territory and bounces foul, it’s a fair ball (even in the infield)
Dig Deeper
There are other differences between today’s game, and the rules changed year to year throughout the mid-nineteenth century as well. You can read all about the rules on the Vintage Base Ball Association website.
