The Original Game

Vintage base ball is an effort to continue the style of play that was original to the game (~1860). Unlike baseball today, vintage base ball is actually more accessible to people of all skill levels. Plus, you don’t even need a glove!

The vintage ball is slightly larger and softer than today’s baseball (9.75 inches in circumference, 5.75 ounces in weight) and is stitched from a single piece of leather. The dark leather was used because it was readily available and easier for players to see when the ball was hit in the air on a clear day.

Unique Rules and Aspects

  • Players don’t wear gloves
  • Wood bats are used
  • The ball is slightly larger and softer than today’s baseball
  • It’s an out if you catch the ball off one bounce
  • Pitching is underhand, with a goal to get the ball in play
  • No balls or walks
  • Strikes only happen if you swing and miss
  • If a ball lands in fair territory and bounces foul, it’s a fair ball (even in the infield)
